Application: Self-Evaluation
Managing the learning environment is a complex and dynamic process that requires extensive knowledge, skill, and experience. It is an area of professional expertise that you will continue to develop throughout your teaching career. This growth will in large part be due to self-reflection and examination of research and theory.
In Chapter 1 of the course text, the authors described their six assumptions about classroom management. Reflect on these assumptions. How closely do they align with your own beliefs and practices? The course text also presents an overview of theories, research, and perspectives on classroom management. As you examine these research-based perspectives on classroom management, consider how they connect to and support your own approach to managing the learning environment.
This week, you will complete a personal inventory to help you examine your current assumptions about classroom management and to gain insights into the knowledge, skills, values, and beliefs that are evident in your classroom. You will have an opportunity to re-evaluate yourself at the end of the course.
Complete the “Classroom Management Self-Inventory” provided below. (You do not need to submit this form).
Classroom Management Self-Inventory (MS Word document)
Then reflect on your responses and write a self-evaluation that describes your approach to classroom management and answers the following questions:
? Which of the authors’ assumptions about classroom management most closely align with your own, and how are these evident in your practice?

? Which of the research and theory-based approaches described in the Learning Resources most closely align with your perspectives on managing the learning environment? For example, do you tend to take more of a counseling approach, do you focus more on instruction, or do you focus on behaviorist methods?
