Canadian Politics
This book review is for a second year Political Science Course.
Book Review
The book review is to be submitted online to the appropriate dropbox on MLS no later than March 9, 2014, 11:59 pm. Anything submitted after this time will be considered late, no matter what (i.e. technological delay or failure is an unacceptable excuse).
Students MUST sign up online for ONE of the books below (maximum 25 students per book). FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN THE ESSAY NOT BEING GRADED. These books are available electronically through your library account. You must then read the book as well as the academic reviews of that book listed below before writing a scholarly review essay. The essay be organized in the following manner:
? A maximum of one page should be devoted to summarizing the book?s main arguments;
? A maximum of one page should be devoted to summarizing the academic reviews of the
book;
? Next, your essay should use at least two to three pages to assess the reviews of the book ?
Here are some questions that might help you complete this part of the essay: Do you agree with the reviewers? assessments of the book? Why or why not? Were the reviewers unfair? How so and why? Were they too soft or too hard? Explain. Did they misunderstand the argument of the book? How so? Whatever position you take on the reviews, make sure you justify it with EVIDENCE. Because you only have three to four pages, I would suggest you concentrate on one or two of the main points raised by the reviewers and fully develop and defend your position on those points.
? Finally, in at least two to three pages provide your own critique of the book. This critique must be different from those offered in the reviews – all books are open to criticism and sometimes reviewers are too harsh or way too easy ? you need to provide your own critique that is separate from the reviewers. Rather than list a variety of critiques in this section (i.e.
????
?here are five weaknesses), it is ALWAYS better to focus on one or two critiques and develop them fully with examples and evidence. Here, you might focus on one or two aspects from the following: main argument, theory, concepts, method, data, cases, and evidence. Assess the main argument. How convincing is it and why is it convincing? Is it applicable to the real world? If we accept the main argument, how much leverage does it give us for understanding what?s going on in the real world of Canadian politics? Give examples to support your position. Assess the theory ? is it fully developed? Or assess the concepts ? are they fully defined and measurable? Do they flow out of the theory that is developed in the book? You might instead asses the methods used ? are they appropriate for the research question and cases chosen? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the method chosen? Or, you could assess the cases ? do they capture the theory or broader phenomenon under study?
? Alternatively, you might instead assess the nature and quality of the evidence. Do they support the hypotheses and arguments offered? What you choose to focus on will depend not only on your abilities and knowledge base, but also on what book you choose to write a review on.
? Instead of critiquing the book, you can also choose to defend the book by demonstrating its worth for explaining the real world of Canadian politics. You can do this by taking the arguments of the book and showing how they explain what?s going on in contemporary Canada. Defending a book is not simply repeating what the book says and repeating the examples and evidence offered in it. Defending a book means testing it against contemporary events not discussed in the book and assessing its applicability to explaining other related events.
? AN ANALYSIS OF THE WRITING STYLE OR ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK IS UNACCEPTABLE. PLEASE DO NOT ENGAGE IN THIS TYPE OF ANALYSIS.
