CAST STUDY: Maples Retail Organisation – Motivation Staff in the Recession
Maples is a retail organisation specialising in quality British made fashion focusing on the sophisticated consumer with over 100 stores across the UK.
Very few businesses were left untouched by the the recession. Maples experiences a fall in sales leading to a reduction in revenue growth and profits. The senior management team in the company were concerned that company was not coping with the recession as well as some competitors.
Senior management at headquarters concluded that it had to take action to improve profitability and cost competitiveness. In late 2009, the company announced that it was making 1,500 people redundant across its world-wide operations and closing 15 stores to obtain a better alignment between costs and expenditure. In spring 2010, the company also announced a company-wide freeze on salaries and promotions. This decision meant having to re-visit a pay agreement made in 2008, which had set down that employees would receive a 4.5 per cent pay increase in 2010.
The CEO has announced a major review of Maples operations, including a drive for expansion into the high quality food retail industry as well as drive to sell more goods via the internet. Such significant changes, if they are to be successful , will require the support of existing staff.Human Resources managers are very concerned that the high staff morale that has previously existed within this organisation should remain despite despite the negative impact of the recession.
