Design Your Own American Art Exhibition

FAS 370: “Design Your Own American Art Exhibition”

Overview
The final project for this course is the creation of an American Art Exhibition. Based on the knowledge obtained in this course and previous course work, please design a fictional museum exhibition that, in your opinion (and based on readings, assignments, discussion, and other course activities), best exemplifies what is distinctly “American” about American art. The final draft of this project is due in Module Eight.

Outcomes
To successfully complete this project, you will be expected to apply what you have learned in this course and should include several of the following course outcomes:
1. Understand the history of American art from the pre-Colonial era to World War II through the examination of paintings, sculpture, prints, architecture, the decorative arts, and photography.
2. Discuss the cultural, social, and historical contexts in which American art and architecture flourished.
3. Explain the negotiations between colonial American and European artistic traditions.
4. Discuss displaced populations (i.e. Native Americans and African Americans), conceptions and representations of the American landscape, transatlantic experiences of the expatriate “American” artists, conflicts between urban and rural conceptualizations of the American experience in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries and, finally, the origins of modernism and the emergence of New York as an international art center.
5. Achieve a thorough understanding of American Art (and American art historical scholarship as a distinct field in the history of Western Art.
6. Recognize and “read” works of art and to form their own conclusions and opinions regarding the subject.
