In 2010, the US Department of Justice announced that it settled one of the largest lawsuits ever against a pharmaceutical firm, Elan Pharmaceutials. As a result of the DOJ’s investigation, Elan paid $202 million to the Federal government and entered into a lengthy corporate integrity agreement. Using these resources, and OIG compliance guidance for pharmaceutical companies, as well as any other resources you deem necessary, prepare a 2 page analysis of (1) how this settlement may be related to ethics and compliance in research and (2) whether you believe the CIA will prevent actions similar to Elan’s from occurring again with other pharmaceutical companies. Support your position by describing why you believe (or don’t believe) that the CIA will impact other pharmaceutical firms from acting similarly.
