REQUIREMENTS OF THE ASSIGNMENT
This is a typical argumentative essay requiring a clearly stated thesis statement. It would be ideal and recommended for you to either underline your thesis statement
or bold it to make your position explicit and clear. Your essay should clearly set out the interpretation of and basis for ‘the changing profile of the Singaporean
workforce’ in the context of your thesis statement and argument(s). Cognition should be taken of the diversity and type of the workforce anticipated and any other
issue relevant to the topic. The essay should also address the interpretation of what constitutes ‘harmonious employment relationship’ in the context of the changing
profile of workforce and any other issue or argument you present in the essay.
If you are proposing a new ER model or an adaptation of any existing ER model, this should be clearly explained in terms of the parties involved, its inclusiveness and
representation of the parties in the ER. If you are maintaining the status quo of the ER, you should similarly elaborate on it and its functionality, efficacy, etc.
Your essay (points of view and assertion) must be well supported by credible evidence, research and source. These must be appropriately referenced. It is important to
give credence to your essay. Therefore, you should provide in-text referencing and end of essay bibliography/reference list of publications, journal articles and
websites you use as your source and research. Please use credible sources e.g. journal articles, mainstream newspapers and well acknowledged authoritative publications
and websites. Published literature and quotes by established subject matter experts, professional bodies and acknowledged opinion movers may be used to support your
arguments.
Students are strongly encouraged to visit the website of Singapore’s Department of Statistics and Ministry of Manpower websites to facilitate writing a better quality
essay on the topic.
You should use the APA Referencing System. Conclude your essay with a clear definitive conclusion in support of your proposed model and a brief statement of your
proposed model.
Your conclusion must be consistent with the thesis statement.
ABOUT ESSAY WRITING
The essay is a typical justification essay. There is no right, wrong or model answer. Therefore it is important to exercise critical analysis in evaluating your
findings and research. Also ensure you give a balanced view and take a justifiable position based on credible anticipation of the future. In completing the essay, you
should take into consideration the past, the present and future employment landscape and scenario. It will be useful to review and research what has worked
historically in Singapore e.g. Tripartism, National Wages Council, flexible wage system, various government initiatives especially in the past decade, etc.
Well written essays would have a good flow of observations and arguments well organised presentation, properly constructed sentences and appropriate paragraphing,
effective and efficient analysis, observations and discussion. Your assertions, observations and arguments should also be well supported by appropriate theory,
research, anecdotal evidence [though not desirable as they often lack universality], and proper referencing. Concepts, principles and terms mentioned in the essay
should also be clearly defined.
No abstract or executive summary is required for your essay.
Do pay attention to headers, sub-headers paragraphing and sentence construction, etc. The presentation, content and organisation of the content will be taken into
account when grading your work.
Also format your answers well so that visually it appears well presented. Your assignment should be neatly printed on white A4 size paper in single spacing in portrait
format; with a 2.5 cm margin all around. Avoid using fancy print. Use Times New Roman Size 12, Arial Size 12, Verdana 11 or equivalent.
A REMINDER ABOUT PLAGIARISM
The penalties for plagiarism, i.e. copying of others’ work, are severe. Any sources of information which are used in completing your work must be identified and
reported in the reference section of your written reports. The word count excludes references and bibliography.
If you copy words directly from a reference, you must put these words in quotation marks and indicate the source, e.g. “A career is the sequence of employment-related
positions, roles, activities and experiences encountered by a person.” (Arnold, 1997, p.16). If you summarize the words or sections from a reference, you must still
indicate the source (Arnold, 1997 p 16-18). In the reference list at the end of your entire assignment, you must include the book title, viz.
Arnold, J (1997): Managing Careers in the 21st Century. London (UK): Paul Chapman Publishing Ltd.
While you may discuss the assignment with other students, parents and family members, friends, lecturers and others as well as seek their advice or guidance, you must
submit work based strictly on your own effort and you must not duplicate (in whole or part) the works of other students (past or present).
