Justice is not the advantage of the stronger (Plato)
Pick an Argument and an Objection and Have your proposal Approved
Much like with the first argument reconstruction, you will have to pick an argument about which to write.
There will be a list of arguments to choose from; you will be responsible for selecting one. Do not choose an argument that you presented previously in your argument reconstruction.
(If you have a strong inclination to use an argument not on the list, ask me for approval.)
Come up with an objection to the argument you?ve chosen. You are seeking to show that the argument fails for some reason, and it?s you job to make a good case for that objection.
Write out your objection, along with the argument you?ve chosen, on the ?Paper 1 ? Objection Proposal? section of the class iLearn page.
Take the argument and objection that you chose in Step 1 and write a draft of the paper in which you will detail them. This paper should have the following structure:
1. Introduction ? tell the reader what argument you have objecting to, and the gist of your objection. Give the reader an idea of what?s coming in the rest of the paper.
2. Argument Reconstruction ? just as in the first argument reconstruction, lay out the argument you?re objecting to. Explain how the argument works, i.e., what the conclusion is and how it?s supported.
3. Objection ? pick something about the argument you have reconstructed and object to that. Show why the argument cannot get you to the conclusion in the way that the author wants it to.
4. Rebuttal ? defend the argument from the perspective its original author. Do your best to show that the objection you came up with does not keep the conclusion from being true, and that the argument still works.
5. Conclusion ? explain briefly the major points of everything you have gone through in the paper. You should quickly recap the conclusion of the argument being reconstructed, the main thrust of your objection, and the gist of the author?s defense against your objection. The conclusion is like a blueprint of the whole paper, and if someone were to read your paper and be confused about how it all fits together, they should be able to look at your conclusion and get the big picture.
6. Works Cited ? list all of the sources you cited. You can use a website like easybib.com to produce a formal works cited. Do not cite sources like Wikipedia.org, cliff notes, sparknotes, etc.
This draft should be a complete paper, and be written in complete sentences with proper grammar and spelling. It is all right for this draft to be rough around the edges, but all of the major structural components should be present.
This part of the assignment will be graded Credit/No Credit, and be worth 75/300 points.
?
After completing your rough draft, you will bring several copies and discuss your paper with your classmates.
In small groups of four, you will read one another?s papers and provide feedback on the abovementioned sections (argument reconstruction, objection, rebuttal, etc.).
Since your peers will be reading your work, your rough draft should be coherent and thought out, though your ideas may very well change as a result of the discussions you will have during the peer review workshop.
This peer review workshop will be as helpful as you choose it to be.
This part of the assignment will not be graded, but if you choose not attend then your paper will be weaker than it otherwise might be. In order to maximize your grade on the Final Draft, I highly recommend that you attend and participate.
This is a polished, strengthened version of your rough draft. You should incorporate any criticisms you receive during the peer review workshop so that your argument is as strong as it can be. The final draft will be held to a higher standard in terms of formatting, grammar and spelling.
You will be graded based upon the following criteria:
? The accuracy of your argument reconstruction; i.e., does your argument reflect what the original author is up to?
? The caliber of your objection. You do not have to come up with a knockdown objection in order to get a good grade, but the objection should demonstrate some serious thought about the argument. If the author could respond to your objection without seriously considering it, then your objection requires more work.
? The cogency of the rebuttal offered on behalf of the original author. As with the objection, this should demonstrate some thought on your part. If you can describe the rebuttal in a few sentences without much explanation, then it probably needs more work.
