Do we put too much emphasis on self-reliance and independence these days, fearing to admit we need other people in our lives? Or do we have a balanced view of independence— avoiding the pitfalls of excessive dependence? Or should we seek complete independence of others?

He expected to provoke controversy with these words, but perhaps these days we place too much emphasis on independence. While excessive dependence on others does not signify maturity, we cannot attain and do not desire total independence of others: perhaps we need to exercise maturity and unselfishness by recognizing our interdependence.
