Sociology Trail of Tears: We Shall Remain
Watch the docudrama ‘Trail of Tears: We Shall Remain”
– What were your initial thoughts about the video? What new and different ways of looking at culture did you experience? Do you feel that the treatment of Cherokee could have been
handled differently and, if so, how might it have changed history?
Before answering the question, think of it in the context of cultural relativism. In other words, try to think of it as though you were living in the United States in the early 1800s… then consider
this: if we think of social phenomena from that vantage point, is it an excuse for certain behavior.
– After watching the docudrama, consider how socialization affected the relationship between the two cultures: Cherokee and settlers. Selecting two methods of socialization, how did
they create the environment that led to the conflict between the two groups? What skills and knowledge did each include, or exclude, that led to the resettlement policies? Is it possible to
consider these using a purely sociological approach? In other words, can we eliminate bias from our view?
