Systems Theory of How an Organization (College or University) Works
Assignment 2: Systems Theory Graphics
Systems Theory comes from the positivist paradigm and is a way of understanding how an organization such as a college or university works. It is best understood visually rather than just described in text. In this assignment, you will create a graphic representation of your department and of a person within that department as they would look in systems theory. By creating drawings to represent the inputs, outputs, and internal systems, you should gain a clear idea of the constraints and capabilities of the department and the individual. You will have looked at them differently, which should reveal many nuances that you may not have considered previously.
Tasks:
• Create two graphics:
o Using the elements found within a general systems framework, create a graphic to describe some of the inputs, transformation processes, and outputs of your own department, division, or institution or one in which you’d like to work.
o Choose one individual within that department, division, or institution to depict using the social systems model. Create a graphic to depict the roles, the expectations, the individual’s personality system, learned beliefs, and needs, as well as his or her psychological and intellectual capabilities, interests, and subculture.
• Include a brief written description of what the graphics represent and cite the sources of the model or models that you are using.
