The Prevention of and Responses to Victimization

Citizens have been given certain rights to protect themselves and prevent becoming victims. If they become crime victims, the legal system is prepared to address their issues. Think about the prevention of and responses to victimization and do the following:

•Describe the benefits and drawbacks of being armed against crime.

•Describe the issues that arise concerning citizen’s arrests and the use of deadly force in self-defense.

•Explain the role genetics currently plays in predicting violent behavior. How can the use of genetics be a powerful tool in preventing crime in the future?

•Compare and contrast the principles of retributive justice and restorative justice. From a victim’s point of view, which is more beneficial?

•Determine whether the legal system and programs to assist victims are effectively meeting victims’ needs and fulfilling reasonable desires. What can be done in the future so the community, police, and local business can work together to reduce the crime rate in their area?
