Answer all the tasks:
Design a list of words in English. These words need to be useful for a
production study of voice onset time (VOT) in word-initial plosives. You
therefore need to think carefully about the design of your word list, e.g.
How many of the following points do you want to cover for the essay?
? Will you be using minimal pairs?
? Will you vary the place of articulation?
? Will you vary the following vowels?
? Will you present the words in isolation or in a carrier phrase? If the
latter, what will the carrier phrase be?
? How many repetitions of words will you use?
? How would you want them to be read out in an experiment? In random
order? By category? One repetition after the other?
1. You will need to submit the full word list in an appendix, presented
in a linguistically meaningful way (e.g. all words for /b/ in one
column, all words for /p/ in another column).
2. Write a justification of the wordlist you designed in light of the
literature on VOT. Justify your choice of words in terms of, amongst
others, their composition (e.g. monosyllabic, bisyllabic, single onset,
cluster onset, vowel choice, etc.), the number of repetitions. Make sure
to justify your design with explicit, concrete discussion and
argumentation.
