youth and community work

Assessment Requirements
In completing this assessed work you must read the articles and book
chapters presented to you in lectures and available on Moodle as this will
assist with the development of your thinking around these subjects. The
assessment for this module is a portfolio of three different elements:
1. An ESSAY – Title: What was the significance of the Albemarle report for
the development of youth work? (2,000 words)
2. Two pieces of reflective writing on topics covered in the module content
(750 words each)
? Topic A: Choose a one of the ethical principles of youth work, as
outlined in ?Ethical Conduct in Youth Work? statement, NYA (2004) and
discuss why it is important to work with young people (750words)
? Topic B: choose one aspect of the ?Positive for Youth? policy (2011)
and explain what impact it might have on young people (750words)
Remember you must support your views with evidence and references to the
views of key writers in this field, national and local government policies and
strategy documents. You should also make links to the history of Youth and
Community Work and principles of informal and non formal education.
Presentation of module work
Your module work should be word-processed and should conform to
academic standards for undergraduate work e.g. 1.5 line spacing. Guidance
can be found in the ?School of Education and Communities Undergraduate
Handbook?. The conventions of in-text referencing and of reference lists is
covered in the level one ED1000 core module Critical Reading and Writing;
additional information is available on Moodle and in Pears and Shields? ?Cite
Them Right? (2010).
Please remember that failure to follow standard academic conventions
when preparing a piece of work will affect your mark.11
Word counts are allowed a margin of +/- 10% (for example, a 3,500 word
task can be under or over by up to 350 words, giving a minimum of 3150
words and a maximum of 3,850 words). You will be penalised if your work is
substantially under or over length (allowing for any margin) and you could be
failed for that assessment (This is also the case for assignments for all other
modules, throughout the duration of your studies).
*You must include one reference list and support your work with in-text
references.
Guidance Notes for Written Assignments
The overall presentation of your work must be clear, coherent and legible.
Use the following questions to guide you through key processes in carrying
out your assignment:
1. Length – is my piece of coursework within the required length?
2. Content – have I identified key issues raised by the question? Have I
referred to the key theoretical frameworks and models we covered in class to
demonstrate my knowledge and understanding of the topic under discussion?
Are the points I make relevant and focussed?
3. Organisation – do I provide a clear introduction explaining how I have
structured the essay? Is the development of my discussion easy to follow? Have
I used section divisions to give a clear focus to each part to guide the reader?
I.e. Clearly marked paragraphs in an essay or sub-headings in a report.
4. Coherence – do I have a clear idea of my general argument / discussion /
analysis? How well have I shown connections between the main points? Are
my paragraphs linked? Am I just reproducing the views of others or writing in
my own voice? Do I provide evidence in support of my arguments?
5. Presentation – have I followed the conventions associated with academic
writing? Is the work word-processed – 12point font and one-and-a-half line
spacing? How well have I checked my work for legibility; unwieldy sentences; 13
grammar, spelling and punctuation; vocabulary and phrasing? (spell checker
will not discriminate between words such as ?their?, ?they?re? and ?there?).
