7-2 Final Project Submission: Public Health Issue Presentation

The final project for this course is the creation of a public health issue presentation.
Public health practice focuses on how to prevent health problems in a population, but within that practice there are many complex factors at play. Public health
practitioners may have specific expertise in one or several subdisciplines such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and management, and/or emergency
preparedness. The settings where public health practitioners work also fall into a wide range and tend to dictate the expertise needed; for example, a local
health department may have one or two staff perform all local public health functions in a community, whereas a larger entity at the state or national level
might need practitioners to be organized by subdiscipline or condition. Regardless of which particular field you pursue and what skill set you ultimately acquire,
you will need to understand what constitutes a public health issue, who is involved in addressing it, and the practical and ethical factors that figure into its
resolution.
This final project provides you with the opportunity to explore public health goals and a public health response to a health problem. You will explore a recent
public health issue identified as a priority public health topic by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) or Healthy People 2020 (or most current
HP edition). You will explore the distribution of the health problem in the population, the public health response to the problem, the public health organization
and practitioners involved in addressing the problem, and current directions to address the problem. This will require the review and summary of appropriate
scientific resources related to the public health problem.
The project is divided into four milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final
submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules One, Three, Four, and Five. The final product will be submitted in Module Seven.
This assessment addresses the following course outcomes:
 Illustrate the roles of organizations and services within the U.S. public health system in addressing public health issues
 Apply public health theoretical frameworks and strategies to current problems in promoting positive health outcomes for people in communities
 Draw connections between public health responses and professional ethics in explaining how social determinants and healthcare disparities are
addressed
 Investigate epidemiological information and public health strategies for explaining the effectiveness of public health responses
Prompt
Develop a presentation (using PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.) that describes a public health issue and national goals set for that problem on Healthy People 2020. The
presentation will give an overview of the distribution of the problem in the United States, factors associated with the problem, social determinants of the
problem, and any health disparities. Your presentation must contain speaker notes that fully address the contents below. Support for your speaker notes will
come from scholarly resources.

Guidelines for Submission: Your public health presentation should be 10 slides in length, use an appropriate application (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.), and
comprehensively address the public health issue using speaker notes and scholarly resources for support. Support for your speaker notes will come from
scholarly resources, including the following: at least two scholarly resources for the background of the public health issue, at least two scholarly resources for
response to the problem, and at least two scholarly resources for current directions to address the problem
