Abnormal Psychology and Contributing Factors to the Development of Mental Disorders

 

For this Assignment, you will select one of the case studies (Accessible from the Course Home) and develop a Patient Portfolio. The goal of the portfolio is to identify a disorder and recommend a plan of action to help the patient manage his or her symptoms and change behavior for therapeutic outcomes.
All work should be in the students own word with quotes used very sparingly. Be sure to address each of the issues, with the use of several sources in the form of in-text citations to support your answers, and use proper APA format, including use Times New Roman 12-pt font.
Part 1: Background information about the patient
1.Provide background information that includes (a) the patient’s disorder, (b) the criterion for the disorder that the patient does meet, (c) any criterion that the patient does not meet, (e) the patient’s symptoms, and (d) the patient’s main problem, including emotional problem and abnormal behavior.
Part 2: Psychological model or theory and causes
1.Compare and contrast the psychological approaches of the Psychological Tradition (psychoanalysis, humanism, and behavioral).
2.Explain which one of the psychological approaches you believe is best applied to understand the patient’s disorder.
Part 3: Genetic and Environmental Influences
1.According to research, is genetic or environmental factors believed to play the most import role in the development of the patient’s disorder.
2.Explain and justify whether you support the research suggesting which factor (genetic or environmental) plays a bigger influence in the development of the patient’s disorder.
Part 4: Treatment
1.Discuss what types of medical approaches (ECT, prescription medications, or psychosurgery) you recommend for the patient based on studies showing its effectiveness in treating the disorder.
2.Compare and contrast the side effects the patient may experience and what benefits these medications have on the brain chemistry or neurotransmitter activity.
3.Explain which psychotherapy and techniques you recommend for the patient. Explain how the chosen therapy and techniques will help the patient to manage his or her symptoms (outcome).
4.Provide both short and long-term goals for the patient’s treatment plan. Include accomplishments or behavioral changes you want to see in the patient.
Part 5: Conclusion
1.Defend your treatment plan by explaining how your treatment would best help the patient compared to another form of treatment.
