B = f(P x S)

B = f (P X S) Project
For this assignment, you will take the personality measure I assigned you and create a new study using that personality measure. This new study must also have a manipulated IV(independent variable). Of course the study needs a DV(dependent variable) and a hypothesis.
A study would be naked without them!
Measure which was assigned:
RWA – Altemeyer, 1998
Example Study
Craig, M. A., & Richeson, J. A. (2014). Not in my backyard! Authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, and support for strict
immigration policies at home and abroad. Political Psychology, 35, 417-429.
Steps in the assignment:
1. Research the personality measure. Find and read research studies which have used that measure. What hypotheses have they tested, what manipulated IVs did they use, and what DVs have they used?
2. Develop a hypothesis, a manipulated IV and DV measure. To receive an A you will need to test a new hypothesis, manipulated IV, and DV, and not a hypothesis and DV from an existing study (such as the one where I found your IV).
3. Write your answer and submit it.
Turn in:
In the dropbox below, submit a .doc, .docx or .pdf document with:
1. List the personality measure I gave you.
2. Describe the manipulated IV you will use. This description should include an operational definition of the IV.
3. Identify where you found the IV. List the APA reference citation for where you found the IV. Then explain why you chose this IV.
4. Describe the DV you will use. This description should include an operational definition of the DV and when and how the DV will be measured.
5. Identify where you found the DV. List the APA reference citation for where you found the DV. Then explain why you chose this DV.
6. Describe the hypothesis for your study. This description should refer to the levels of the IV and the directional change on the DV.
7. Identify the sources you used to make the predictions in your hypothesis. List the APA reference citation for each and briefly
state how this study helped you build your hypothesis.
This should be double spaced and should not be an essay, but 5 answers. If you know what you are doing it should be less than 2 pages.
Grading
Is the manipulated IV a reasonable IV I would see in Social Psychology?
Is the DV a reasonable DV I would see in Social Psychology?
Is the hypothesis correctly worded?
Is the hypothesis based on a Social Psych theory?
Is the answer well written?
Are the references full and correct?
If you turn in a IV – DV – Hypothesis set from another existing Social Psych study, the highest grade you can receive is a B+ (89%).
If you work with other who have the same personality measure, multiple members cannot turn in the same IV – DV – Hypothesis set.
To be clear:
To receive an A a student must find a manipulated IV, a DV and a hypothesis from at least two different research studies — and thus
create a new study.
Easier version: A student needs to find a study which uses the assigned personality measure and also has a manipulated IV. They can then base their assignment on that single article. If they do this, then the highest grade they can received is a 89%. Students cannot base their assignment on the example article I gave with the assignment.
