Instructional Objectives for this activity:
Outline how alliances evolve and dissolve
Most firms want to make their relationship work, but also want to protect themselves in case the other side is opportunistic. The relationship can be described in human marriage terms, such as when premarital assets are protected by prenuptial agreements. Like divorce, alliance dissolution can either be friendly or hostile.
Explain how the four factors shown in Figure 12.6 on page 379 of the text impact how the alliance will evolve and whether or not it will dissolve. Identify which factor you believe is the most important influence in alliance performance and provide rationale.
