There are no required topics; the requirement is just that you must focus on Professional Ethics (and not, for example, Business Ethics or any other separate discipline). Several professions and topic areas are discussed in our course, but you may choose one that is not included in our course, as our course does not cover all groups who could reasonably be considered professionals according to the criteria and characteristics that we studied near the start of the course.For assignment #3, you analyze a professional ethics issue that arises from a case you have chosen. First, you find a case that you think is interesting and important, and one that indicates a moral controversy or dilemma. The case can be from our course materials or it can be from another book or from an online source. You may also create your own case, as is explained in the assignment instructions.Once you choose a case, you need to clearly state ONE main professional ethics issue that arises from the case. This should be expressed as a question, one that captures the problem or dilemma faced by the professional involved. This moral question and its possible answers are the focal points of your analysis, and your aim is to provide an analysis which, by the end, shows why you ultimately support a particular conclusion (answer to the question).Once you clearly state the issue, you should mention the possible answers/resolutions to this issue, which you will analyze. If your question is a Yes/No question, then your possible answers are Yes and No, and your analysis will critically examine relevant reasoning for the Yes side and for the No side, so that, by the end of your paper, you have shown which of these answers is morally best (in your view, which would be based on the well-considered reasoning you have offered in the body of your assignment). Alternatively, your question might not be a Yes/No question, but might be more open ended (e.g., “What should Jones do?” Or “Under what conditions is Jones’ action morally justified?”). The possible answers would be various things the professional could do or what kinds of conditions are relevant to determining the justifiability of the action and, so, need to be considered. Your analysis would critically examine each of these things, and your goal would be to determine which of those actions would be morally best or what subset of the conditions, if any, justify the action, based on the reasoning you provide.So, once you indicate the case you are using, and you clearly state the issue question and the options for answering that question, the bulk of your assignment will be explaining and critically discussing the reasoning that is relevant.
