Overview
This discussion asks you look at the role of the family health nurse in a genetic counseling scenario. Imagine that you are a family health nurse, and today in your office you will be seeing a married couple who are both carriers for a genetic disorder (for example, sickle cell, cystic fibrosis, or Huntington’s disease). This couple would like to have children, but since they are both carriers for a genetic disorder, they are seeking your advice on what they should do before they attempt to start a family.

• Address topics described in the above overview and objectives.
• Assignment should include a minimum of 3 professional references. One reference may be your text book. One must be a refereed journal article, and the other may come from a professional website. All journal articles must be no older than five years.

• Word limit 300 minimum excluding references.

•When creating your initial post for the discussion board, consider these questions: ◦What services can a genetic counseling session provide to these patients? Discuss how you would take a detailed family history and assess and analyze potential genetic problems in their offspring.
◦Would you recommend genetic testing before they attempt to have children? Can you facilitate testing?
◦What are some advantages and disadvantages or genetic testing?
◦What would their future children’s risks be?
◦Genetic counseling can be very emotional – discuss how you would handle this. How would you provide psychosocial support?
