Format for the Paper: Turabian style, Seven to Ten pages (not including title page), Title page, black ink, double spaced, 10 or 12 pt type (Times only), 1” borders. Footnotes and a Bibliography are required. Five images or more, with each at least half a page in size. Images should not be included in the body of the paper, but instead should be at the end of the paper, after the bibliography page. Each image should have an image number, the title, the artist’s name, date, and medium. The image number related to the order each image appears in your paper, and that number should also be listed in the body of your paper in parenthesis when you mention the image.
-At least five images to be put at the back of the paper, after the Bibliography
-You should have at least five SUBSTANTIAL sources, yes, using books, with limited web sources. Legit web sources are those websites ending in only .edu, .gov, .org or a website dedicated exclusively to your artist or movement. JSTOR, an online academic resource source available through our library website, is an excellent source for academic level articles.
-One of those sources should be a primary source.
-Footnotes AND a Bibliography are required. They must be in the Chicago Manual of Style (aka Turabian Style)

Make sure you proofread your papers for adhering to the information listed above, as well as incorrect grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other errors. Your grade will reflect your ability to follow these guidelines. Please refer to the “Paper Grading Guidelines” that is located in the Assignments folder on Bb.
Purpose of the Paper:
-to describe the background of and artistic progression of the artist toward her/his mature (or most well-known) style.
-include images that describe this progression
-include those artists, movements, political/social/cultural context or particular works that influenced the artist
-to describe that style in depth, as well as that style or artist’s contributions to the artistic world (what impact it had).
-to give examples that best represent that style, and why (describe and include actual images).
-Also include info about why you chose that artist! Were you influenced by his/her style or a particular work? How? Why?
Description: Your paper is to not only tell your reader about your artist, but also, and more specifically, their art. To aid in writing your paper, you should consider making a list of the major points that you would want your reader to know about your artist before you begin writing. You will also want to include a description of at least five works of art, as well as physical images of them. When your reader finishes reading your paper, she/he should have a basic idea of what that artist was all about and a good idea of what the works looked like and the artist’s intent. However, you will need to decide what information is the most important, so choose the information wisely, and then concentrate on those areas to build your paper.
Guidelines: In the first paragraph, called the introduction, you will include:
•the name of the artist/movement
•a brief introduction to the artist/movement: where and when he/she lived or where the movement originated, and what style of art he/she or the movement is most well known
•a thesis statement which sums up your thoughts of the artist and his/her work. To give the biggest ‘pow’ effect, place the thesis statement as the last sentence in your intro.
•limit your info in the intro to generalities about the artist. Use the details of that person’s work or life in the body of the paper.
Content: From that point, the rest of the paper should include not only information about their life (but limit yourself!), but especially those details that led to the development of their mature style (influences, training, etc). Remember that your paper should not be a random flow of ideas about the work (i.e. stream of consciousness writing). Rather, your paper should have a sense of order, moving purposefully through your description with regard to specific elements (ex: one paragraph may deal with childhood, another with schooling, another with early artistic experiences, early works in another sentence, etc., and usually addressing their life chronologically works well). Finally, in your conclusion (the final paragraph) you will want to create a one to two sentence summation of the artist and their works, and finish with a restatement of your thesis.
