HEALTH INFORMATICS

Module 3 – Case

Health Informatics in the Clinical, Administrative, and Research Settings

Case Assignment

Literature strongly suggests that the frequency of error in medicine is substantial. Even more concerning is the frequency of respective harm caused by medical errors. Accordingly, it is not difficult to connect frequency of medical errors to overall quality of patient care.

The following article, Reducing the Frequency of Errors in Medicine Using Information Technology, discusses the use of information systems to reduce the number of medical errors and their adverse implications. For this case assignment, read through the article and write a scholarly paper that addresses the following:
1.Identify three to four common sources of medical errors and their potential implications.
2.Describe ways that information technology and systems can be used to help mitigate these errors.
3.Beyond reducing errors, describe other ways the health information systems and discipline of Health Informatics as a whole can improve the quality of patient care.
4.Reach into the background material, online library and Internet for a larger look at Health Informatics and to find supporting evidence for your paper.

Assignment Expectations

Use information from the modular background materials and case assignment narrative as well as any quality resources you can find via the online libraries or Internet.

LENGTH: 3-4 pages typed and double spaced using 12pt Times New Roman font and 1-inch page margins.

The following items will be assessed in particular:
•Analysis and explanations surrounding the benefits of integrating and sharing information and data in addition to information and technology systems that facilitate the same (wireless, mobile computing devices, CPOE, EMR…etc.).
•Define Health Informatics and its domain.
•Describe key areas of Health Informatics, their relationship to various healthcare disciplines, and how these areas help to reduce medical errors.
•Summarize ways that health information systems benefit the quality of healthcare in the clinical, administrative and research settings.
•Use and application of literature, expert opinion and references from your research to support your position, key points and explanations. Follow APA format for your paper including in-text citations and references.

Your case paper will be further evaluated based on the grading rubric (found under Assessments>Rubrics).

Additional considerations to keep in mind while working on your case assignments:

Originality and Use of directly quoted material
•The purpose of each assignment is for you to present your understanding and synthesis of the background material and key concepts. Accordingly, this must be accomplished substantially in your own words.
•Use directly quoted material sparingly and only when preserving the exact words of an author is necessary. For purposes of this course, rarely should directly quoted material represent more than 5-10 percent of your entire case paper’s content. Composing a paper patched together from mostly quoted material is not acceptable.
•Be sure to properly reference all directly quoted material and include the in-text citations.

Please submit your assignment by the end of this module.
