ASSIGNMENT : PLANNING FOR TEACHING
The purpose of this assignment is to begin developing your skills in planning for teaching HSIE. The task requires you to produce a pedagogical statement about teaching HSIE in contemporary classrooms. You will also design a lesson plan by selecting one of the CASE STUDIES provided. This lesson will apply the approach you have discussed in your pedagogical statement and include engaging strategies.
PART ONE: Pedagogical Statement
Graduate teachers are increasingly being asked to state their philosophy of teaching as a pedagogical statement, which is also referred to as a ‘Professional Statement’. A pedagogical statement outlines how you plan to teach in contemporary classrooms and why. AITSL requires a pedagogical statement to draw on all three domains of the Teaching Professional Standards for Teachers [APST]. These are Professional Knowledge, Professional Practice and Professional Engagement.
The purpose of part one is to support you in developing this skill in alignment with the Teaching Professional Standards for Teachers. The format will compose of three paragraphs, with each paragraph focussed on one of the different domains listed above so that all three domains are generally addressed equal to your learning over the semester that relate to these areas. You will draw on the rationale of the HSIE K-6 Syllabus (NESA, 2017), the textbook (Reynolds, 2014) and the essentials readings to assist you. Also, synthesising your understanding from the recommended readings and the PFPs into your statement will benefit your work here. This means that you will use intext references to support your statement. Your statement is an individual expression of your intent for teaching but a well-developed statement will:
• Make your reader able to ‘see’ what your HSIE classroom will look like; what you and your students will be doing, using, learning and, experiencing.
• Write in present tense. You can use first person.
• Write the content with the audience of a potential educational employer in mind.
• You can use this statement as data for your learning portfolio.
PART TWO: A Lesson Sequence
Part TWO requires you to choose ONE of the case studies. Using the selected case study, you will design a 60–90 minute HSIE lesson sequence. When designing the lesson sequence you MUST:
• Use the teaching stimulus provided in the case study as a starting point for the lesson content.
• Use the lesson plan template provided in the Assignment 2 folder on vUWS.
• NOT change the stage, outcome, the CCP or the teaching resource assigned to the case study.
• Include up to FOUR additional resources to develop an engaging lesson. These may include an artefact, a book, a website, or a game.
• You need to include engaging strategies to involve your students in the HSIE content and in using the resources you have selected. These may be technology tools such as QR codes, a Popplet, a Google Earth or Google Maps. They can be strategies provided to you in VUWS such as KWL charts, Brainstorming, 3-2-1 strategies, those developed during the tutorials over the semester, or shared by other groups in the field site presentations, but they need to relate to the HSIE content in your lesson.
• Make sure you include technology authentically and effectively in the lesson.
• You can use this data for your learning portfolio.
