Mandatory voting

In some countries around the world, voting is mandatory. For example, in Australia, all citizens age 18 and older are required to vote during the elections. Failure to do so can result in a fine and possible jail time. Due to this law, Australia boasts a voter turnout rate (during general/federal elections) of 94%, compared to the U.S. average of 51% – 57% (during presidential elections, it is even lower in non-presidential years). With this in mind, please write an academic research paper 4-6 pages (double-spaced) in length explaining your position on whether you believe the United States should make voting a mandatory law. Explain the pros and cons of such a law, and back up your position with at least 6 citations from outside sources, which can include the class textbook, or other credible academic sources (Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for any academic paper).
