The transition from novice to professional nurse is rarely linear and its progression is influenced by internal and external factors. There are a number of theories about the process of transition which can assist in understanding the sometimes confusing and stressful experience of being a newly graduated registered nurse. Using contemporary research findings about new graduates’ transition to practice, this essay will address the following questions:
1. What are considered the top three issues for new graduate nurses in transitioning to employment?
2. What factors affect how new graduate nurses manage these issues in their transition to employment?
3. What strategies can new graduate nurses use to ensure their first year of employment is a positive experience?
