Chapter 9
ACTIVITIES I ASSESSMENTS
The textbook provides specific examples of standardized data sets. Select one of these data sets
and create a mat includes the following information:
0 Why the data set was created and the purpose it serves.
0 The care setting in which the data set is used (e.g., ambulatory, acute care, etc.).
0 Provide examples of at least five data elements that are included in the data set.
0 Provide a data definition of each of the five selected data elements (e.g., if the data
element is “patient name”, the definition might read “legal first, middle, and last name of
the patient”).
0 Using data modeling principles identify whether any of the five selected data elements
have any interdependence.
0 Evaluate whether it would be appropriate to include this data set as part of a database
management system (DBMS), a data repository, and! or a data warehouse. Your opinion
must be supported.

Lesson 8 Discussion:
You are an HIM professional who works in the Information Technoiogy(1T) Department. You have a strong
background in HIM and IT. You have been asked to create a data dictionary for a new Master Patient Index
(MP1). However, you notice a number of quality issues in the information that has been provided to
you. Evaluate the table below to find possible problems with the way the fields would be entered into the
system. Make at least 3 recommendations on how you can improve this information. Things to look for include
missing data elements, inappropriate data elements, ways to build quality into the system, ways to improve
data collection, etc.
