Explain the three terms :Evangelisation, Catechesis and Religious Education, and explore their relationship to one another

Intentions :
To spread the good
news among those
who do not believe
conversion
To revive flagging faith
re-commitment
Desired outcomes :
More people believe the gospel message
More people live the gospel message more fully

 

Examples of evangelisation : mission work / parish / public witness

Catechism
katechizein (Greek) = “teach orally, instruct by word of mouth”
catechesis = process of teaching of religion
catechist = teacher of religion
catechism = book of religious instruction
catechumen = (in RCIA) a non-Christian becoming Catholic
candidate = (in RCIA) a Christian becoming Catholic

Intentions :
To instruct those new to the faith
To further instruct those growing in faith

Target audiences :
Those wishing to become members of the Roman Catholic communion
Those wishing to become Christians and members of the Roman Catholic communion
Those wishing to grow in faith through the Sacraments
Those for whom it is wished that they grow in faith through the Sacraments
Those responsible for others whom they wish to grow in faith through the Sacraments

Desired outcomes :
The Church welcomes new members
The Roman Catholic communion welcomes members of other denominations
Roman Catholics receive God’s grace through the Sacraments
Members of the community learn to promote growth of the faithful in their care

 

Six tasks of catechesis
Teach the message of the Gospel
Lead people to prayer
Give moral formation
Educate for worship
Build community
Develop an awareness that a Christian is one who continues the mission and work of Jesus Christ today

Examples : baptism : education for parents , marriage preparation courses etc

To engage in teaching and learning content specific to religion
To foster religious literacy
To promote a spirit of enquiry about religion
To deliver agreed curricula

 

Desired outcomes :
Increased religious knowledge of the learner
Increased understanding of religion by the learner
Enhanced skills in religious education
Enthusiasm for religious learning
Ability to continue learning independently
