The goal of this chapter is to discuss how to develop resilience in health care providers while embedding a vision of zero avoidable harm into the culture of the health care system. Achieving this vision requires a risk management strategy that includes (1) identifying risk–finding out what is going wrong; (2) analyzing risk–collecting data and using appropriate methods to understand what it means; and (3) controlling risk–devising and implementing strategies to better detect, manage, and prevent the problems from occurring (Dickson, 1995).
