Statistics Project: Vehicle Efficiency

Statistics Project: Vehicle Efficiency

Due:

In this project, you will be using data to calculate various statistical values such as: mean, median, mode, maximum, minimum, standard deviation and z-scores. You will compare the data to your personal information. You will also create tables and graphs to help analyze the data. You will be asked to reflect on your findings.

In this project you are required to do the following:

  1. Download the Excel file with the MPG data.
    • Put your name, course name and project name on your spreadsheet
    • Use Excel to find the following statistics for the given data: Mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, range, and Standard deviation of the MPG values.
  1. Calculate the z-score of the mpg for your vehicle (or the vehicle that you are most commonly transported in).The MPG value can either be provided by the owner/operator of the vehicle, or obtained from https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.shtml or similar website.
  2. Create visual representations of the data.
  • Create a frequency distribution table for the type of vehicle. Excel’s ability to sort data will be useful for this, although you do not have to use Excel to determine the frequencies.
  • Create an appropriate graph of the type of vehicle.
  • Create a frequency distribution table of the frequency of mpg values for the data. To do this you must first determine what range of values to use for each class interval. Excel’s ability to sort data will be useful for this, although you do not have to use Excel to determine the frequencies.
  • Create theappropriate graph of the frequency of cars in the mpg value rangesfrom your frequency distribution table.

Include appropriate labels on your graphs.

  1. Write a reflection paper about your experience with this data project. Remember that we are looking for elegant and sophisticated reasoning. Include the following items:
  • Your name, course and name of the project.
  • Reflect on and analyze the values you found in your spreadsheet:
    • Quantify what types of vehicles were used by people in this survey.
    • Report on the statistical values found for this data; what information did you learn from the statistics on this data. Which value best represents the ‘average’ MPG for this data set?
    • How is the data distributed? Is it skewed? Explain. What does this tell you about the data? How is this reflected in your histogram?
  • Interpret the meaning of the z-score for your vehicle. Explain what the z-score for your value tells you about your personal fuel efficiency.
  • Explain your process for making the frequency tables and graphs. How/why did you decide to use your class-intervals? How/why did you determine what type of graph to use?
  • Explain the advantage(s) of creating frequency tables and graphs of the data over leaving the data in the original form.
  • Reflect on the results of your project. What did you learn by doing this project? How might Excel help you analyze data or calculatestatistics in the future?

In addition to the above instructions, your project should:

  • Be well organized and easy to follow.
  • Have clearly labeled columns and statistics.
  • Have titles and labels on graphs.
  • The paper should be in paragraph form (not just bulleted answers!).
  • Be clear to someone who is not familiar with the project.
  • Provide support for your statements e.g. explain how values were found.
  • Give specific values (i. e. quantify statements).
  • Use appropriate representations (tables, color, formatting) that help the reader understand the project.
  • Project should be your original work, copying someone else’s work is cheating, sharing your work with someone else is cheating.
