An investigator tested for racial discrimination by loan officers at banks. Each of 120 loan officers was given background information on an applicant and asked how much money he or she would be willing to lend the individual. Forty of the loan officers were told that the applicant was African American, 40 were told she was white, and 40 were told she was Hispanic. Aside from this, the descriptions of the applicant were identical.
