For this Assignment, you will develop a 20–26 slide presentation (including Cover and Reference pages) that examines eight different administrative agencies.
You are working for a Senate Committee concerned with appropriations and oversight for various regulatory agencies. In the current political climate, many Congresspersons and critics are suggesting that budgets for administrative agencies should be cut, in order to have less bureaucratic “red tape.” Other groups want stronger protections in light of global financial and environmental disasters. Your supervisor, the Chair of the Senate Committee, advocates a position that regulatory agencies help protect the American public, and needs you to prepare a presentation for her opening statement at the next appropriations (budgetary) and oversight hearing.
The Senator is open to any criticisms or concerns about how regulatory agencies’ power impact upon the public, in order to ensure fairness and efficiency of the system and to analyze the contemporary importance of the agencies.
You will include the following points in the presentation:
The Agency’s purpose and goal in providing some form of protection for the public.
The customary types of challenges and problems the agency handles within its jurisdiction.
The specific actions the agency takes to address the problems it encounters, i.e. investigation, hearing, litigation)
Provide an actual example of an agency action and whether it had a positive or negative result in protecting the American public and/or the global community.
If you have a positive analysis and assessment of the agency’s goals and actions, this analysis is what the Senator will use to argue that the agencies should receive appropriate funding, not budget cuts. However, if you find in your research that an agency is not achieving its goals and that its funding is not being used appropriately, then your explanations of those problems and actions will assist the Senator in advocating stronger oversight of the agency.
