Informed consent has become part of the standard of care in all areas of medicine, providing the patient with information that they need to make a truly informed decision about their medical care. The guidelines for informed consent can become blurry when one considers the multitude of ways in which consent can be obtained: expressed, implied, written, or verbal. Practitioners must be cautious in how they obtain consent from their patients.
Where did the concept of informed consent originate, and what is the purpose in obtaining it from our patients? Is there any one right way in which to gain consent from your patient? Is there a wrong way?
