Interior design

Evaluation Details
To complete this project, you will need an HB pencil, sketch paper, coloured pencils, high-quality art
markers with alcohol-based ink, black fine point and bold point felt-tip pens, and a high-quality piece of
white paper.
Scenario
You are working as an interior designer, and making a sketch of a new layout for one of your clients’ living
rooms.
LaSalle College 2 2012-02-01 (v. 1)
Instructions
1. You must draw the living room using one point-perspective, and include the objects from the
following image, in the same place.
Start by drawing a one-point perspective grid. You can use a ruler in the beginning to draw some of the
lines, but go back over them freehand. Position the different pieces of furniture in the correct place. Do
not erase your guidelines. Scan this first sketch.
2. After scanning your drawing, erase the guidelines and make a monochrome rendering in grey values
using your alcohol-based art markers Depict the values accurately and draw the contrasts between
shadow and light correctly. Scan this second sketch.
3. On another sheet, test out some different colours using your markers and coloured pencils to create
colours that you will add to your drawing. Mix the coloured pencils with the markers, or mix the markers
together to create different tones. Use a blender pencil if necessary. You can also test using hatching and
textures, for example.
4. When you are satisfied with your results, add colour to your monochrome drawing. Use the right tools
to make renderings in the drawing and to add depth.
5. Using colour and appropriate techniques, add the textures of your fabrics, the floor surface and
everything in the room. Scan this colour rendering.

Scenario
You are now working in the field of interior design. To practise drawing spaces, you decide to draw a
living room based on a photograph. However, you do not want to reproduce every single detail of the
image—you would like to adapt the decorations to suit your taste.
Instructions
1. You must draw the living room in two-point perspective and include the following objects:
 A square coffee table
 Two couches
 A window
Base your layout of the couches and table on the following image. You must however replace the shelf on
the right with a window, which will serve as the primary light source in the room.
LaSalle College 2 2012-02-01 (v. 1)
Begin by drawing the outline of the room from an oblique perspective. First draw a 10 x 8 inch (254 x
203 millimetre) grid, which will serve as a base to help you to place the objects. Then draw the couches,
coffee table and window using perspective techniques. Scan this initial sketch, without erasing your
guidelines.
2. Once you have scanned the drawing, erase your guidelines. Draw in the form shadows and cast
shadows of the objects in the room. Only take the primary light source into account, which means the
light from the window. Next, translate the local values of the elements in the room into values of grey.
Add hatch marks and gradations to represent the shadows and colours of the objects. Use the techniques
of overlapping, foreshortening, shading and focus to add depth to the drawing. Scan this second sketch.
3. Add the following elements to the drawing:
 Light curtains for the windows
 A glass vase
 A chrome lamp
 A brick wall
Add textures to these and the other elements of the drawing. Pay attention to the distribution of light and
shadow. Scan this third sketch.
