Psychopharmacology

Please note: The questions are for you to consider the Harm Reduction perspective. Whether you agree with it or not, apply it to the questions below. Therefore, categorical statements against harm reduction in favor of strict sobriety in recovery will result in a request to amend your answer.

1) Do you think that Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) should both increase their regulations and invest more money in monitoring Methadone clinics in order to reduce unethical behavior on the part of the treatment staff (e.g., by ignoring their dirty drug screens or strongly encouraging addicts to increase their dose – thus prolonging their need for maintenance for the clinic’s financial gain)? Also, Should there be time limits on how long a client is allowed to remain in a methadone clinic? Should there be more regulations regarding clients wanting to return to the clinic after temporarily dropping out so as to be able to resume using heroin again?

2) People who are withdrawing from alcohol or benzodiazepines are usually admitted in to inpatient treatment because the withdrawal symptoms can be life threatening. Heroin addicts are often denied inpatient treatment because the withdrawal symptoms are not life threatening (and many do not have insurance to pay for it), but that is necessary in order to be started on Suboxone. Do you think that as taxpayers we should put money towards paying for that?

Please note: a heroin addict will most likely return to using again to get rid of the withdrawal symptoms if they are unable to find assistance whether they want help or not. This assignment most be at least 300 words long.
