Or is it the sequence of events that Briony describes in her postscript that ends with Robbie dying in France and Cecilia dying in the bombing of London? What are the implications of making one choice or the other?
Are there any clues in Part I of the novel that what we are reading is not a novel with an omniscient, heterodiegeticnarrator? After reading the conclusion of the novel, how do those clues point to Briony as the author?
