Before the action of the play takes place, we know that Henry IV has stolen the crown by murdering the rightful king, his cousin, Richard II; we come across another plot among Falstaff and his gang to rob the pilgrims going to Canterbury; and finally we read of the plot among Hotspur and his relatives to take the crown from Henry IV.
