QUESTION:-Choose two or three historical images from Peter Doyle’s Crooks Like Us (a book of historical mugshots from 1910s-1930s Sydney) or City of Shadows (a book of historical crime scenes from Sydney in the same period).-Find out what you can about your chosen images.-Are they of individuals who were reported in the press at the time? Are they photographs of the scenes of well-known crime that were also reported in the press –or can you otherwise find reports of similar crimes in similar periods that helps you imagine what took place in the photograph? -Brainstorm what kind of historical account of Sydney your sources might allow you to tell. Could you use them to research domestic life or interior design, perhaps? Could you use them to research about street culture, or dress, or intimate relationships, or a particular sort of crime?-In any of these cases, what sorts of observations would your sources allow you to make, and what else would you need to know to develop your historical account?-Finally, can you find any secondary sources that might help you find out what you want to know?START WRITING: You might want to begin writing about your sources in a quite descriptive and personal way – eg. describing what the source is, whether you have found out anything about its backstory. Make sure you also discuss:* what sort of historical project/s the primary source might be useful for and/or what research questions it might allow you to explore:* what else you would need to know in order to conduct a research project using the source, and what secondary sources might help you. *NOTE: with secondary source don’t forget to write up a description of the source used.
